Ten years ago I learned the lion dance at a kung fu school in Rotterdam. During the lion dance, basic movements of kung fu are used. It is a traditional dance often performed during special occasions, including Chinese New Year. It is believed to bring good luck and prosperity as it chases away evil spirits. They are chased away by the music, among other things. Two years ago I finally decided to start my own Asian entertainment company with which we do various shows.

Different stories are portrayed during the lion dance. One of them is to chase away the so-called Nian monster. That monster ate all the crops of the farmers in a Chinese village and no one dared to stand up to him. Eventually the villagers figured out how to defeat the monster by wearing a red lion robe and making loud noises with pans. Because of this, the Nian was eventually chased away. That is the story portrayed during the Chinese New Year.
